June 8, 2007

The Canadian Crime Stoppers Association is joining the world wide appeal to help find Maddy McCann, the four-year-old girl who was abducted while on vacation with her parents in Portugal just over a month ago.

Ralph Page, Chair of the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association, said all Crime Stoppers programs across Canada are being asked to issue media appeals and place information about the missing girl on their web sites.

“There is always the possibility that someone somewhere has information that will help solve a case,” Page said. “The Canadian Crime Stoppers Association wants to make sure that everything possible is being done to find this girl.”

He said the Crime Stoppers organization in the United Kingdom (Crimestoppers UK) has already mounted a campaign to assist police in taking tips from people across Europe and Crime Stoppers programs in other parts of the world are being encouraged to provide whatever assistance they can.

Madeleine (Maddy) McCann was abducted from the bedroom of the hotel where she was sleeping on May 3 with two siblings while her parents had dinner on a nearby patio.

Page said investigators are asking people to look closely at Maddy’s right eye which is the most distinguishing feature if anyone sees this girl. “There is a dark line on the iris of her right eye resembling a little teardrop,” he said. “That’s something anyone might notice and could be instrumental in identifying the girl.”
